比較表現は少し難しい。
気合を入れて取り組みたい文法単元です。
今回は、ぜひ覚えておきたい比較級を使った表現。
形容詞の比較級を使った慣用表現は英文によく登場しますし、試験にもよく出ます。
その中でも必ず覚えておきたいものを選びました。
この機会に確認しておきましょう。
１．the 比較級 ～ , the 比較級 …「～すればするほど…」
２．比較級 and 比較級「ますます、だんだんと」
３．ラテン語由来の比較級 + to (比較対象は than ではなく to～）
４．(all) the 比較級 + 理由の副詞句、節「～なのでよけいに…」
５．none the 比較級 + 理由の副詞句、節「～だからといってちっとも…でない」
６．(all) the 比較級 + 理由の副詞句、節「～なのでますます…だ」
※理由を表す副詞句、節には for～, on account of～, because～, since～, as～などが使われます。
それでは以下、例文と合わせてご覧下さい。
１．the 比較級 ～ , the 比較級 …「～すればするほど…」
The richer the country became, the more arrogant it became and the more it threatened its neighboring countries with military power.
「その国は豊かになればなるほど、ますます傲慢になり軍事力で隣国を脅すようになった。」
The more power the dictator gained, the more suspicious he became fearful of betrayal by his close aides.
「その国の独裁者は権力を得れば得るほど、側近の裏切りを恐れてますます疑心暗鬼になった。」
２．比較級 and 比較級「ますます、だんだんと」
Since the surgery, she has been feeling better and better.
「その外科手術を受けてから彼女はだんだん体調がよくなっている。」
After the fall of the capital, uneasiness of the residents have been proved right and the security situation is getting worse and worse.
「首都陥落後、住民の不安は的中し、治安状況は悪化の一途をたどっている。」
３．ラテン語比較級 to (比較対象は than ではなく to～）
※代表的なラテン語由来の比較級は senior, junior, major, minor, superior, inferior, prior, posterior など。
Tokugawa Ieyasu is nine years junior to Oda Nobunaga.
「徳川家康は織田信長より９歳年下である。」
No other aircraft engine in the world was superior in terms of reliability to the Sakae engine designed by Nakajima Aircraft Company at that time.
「当時、中島飛行機が設計した栄エンジンを信頼性の面で上回る航空機エンジンは、世界に存在しなかった。」
４．(all) the 比較級 + 理由の副詞句、節「～なのでよけいに…」
She’s all the cuter because she’s got a bit of a careless side to her.
「彼女にはおっちょこちょいなところがあるので余計に可愛い。」
He is all the more reliable for us since the stubbornness of his character.
「彼は性格が頑固なので、私たちにとってはより頼もしい存在なんです。」
５．none the 比較級 + 理由の副詞句、節「～だからといってちっとも…でない」
The people seemed none the happier because they were still under Stalin’s reign of terror even though the war had been over.
「戦争が終わっても、スターリンの恐怖政治が続いていたので、人々はちっとも幸せそうには見えなかった。」
Hideyoshi was none the less uneasy because he had no heir even with all his wealth and power.
「秀吉は、富と権力があっても世継ぎがいないことに不安を感じていました。」
