私個人の印象ですが比較表現というのは英語の文法単元で一番難しいものではないでしょうか。
問題を見て頭を悩ますことが多いように感じます。
実際、読解においてもある種の型、慣用的な表現が身に付いていないと内容を理解するによく苦労します。
今回はその中でもよく見かける、形容詞の最上級を使わずに意味的に最上級を表現している慣用表現を取り上げたいと思います。
いずれも読解や英作文に頻繁に登場するものですからこの機会に確認しておきましょう。
１．No(other) + 名詞 + is + 比較級 + than ～
２．Nothing(Nobody) + is + 比較級 + than ～
３．No(other) + 名詞 + is as(so)+ 原級 + as ～
４．Nothing(Nobody) + is as(so)+ 原級 + as ～
５．比較級 + than any other + 単数名詞
それでは以下、例文と合わせてご覧下さい。
１．No(other) + 名詞 + is + 比較級 + than ～
※「誰（何）も～ほど～ない」
※ other の後ろは単数
No child in Nobita’s class is smarter than Dekisugi.
「のび太のクラスでは出木杉ほど賢い児童はいない。」
No other animal on earth can run faster than the cheetah.
「地球上でチーターより速く走れる動物はいない。」
２．Nothing(Nobody) + is + 比較級 + than ～
※「誰（何）も～ほど～ない」
Nothing is better than that performance.
「あのパフォーマンスに勝るものはない。」
Nobody was wiser than Shoin in the Choshu Domain at that time.
「当時の長州藩には、松陰よりも賢い者はいなかった。」
３．No(other) + 名詞 + is as(so)+ 原級 + as ～
※「誰（何）も～ほど～ない」
※ other の後ろは単数
No other Nobunaga’s vassal was as familiar with the customs of the Imperial Court as Mitsuhide.
「信長の家臣の中で、光秀ほど朝廷のしきたりに精通している者はいなかった。」
At the time of its development, no other fighter plane had so long a range as the Zero.
「開発当時、零戦ほど航続距離の長い戦闘機はありませんでした。」
４．Nothing(Nobody) + is as(so)+ 原級 + as ～
※「誰（何）も～ほど～ない」
Nothing is as hard as diamond.
「ダイヤモンドほど固い物質はない。」
No man in the Imperial Navy is so lucky in winning as Togo.
「帝国海軍の中で、東郷ほど勝ち運に恵まれた男はいない。」
５．比較級 + than any other + 単数名詞
※「他のどんな～よりも」
※ any other の後ろは単数
The marathon is tougher than any other track and field sport.
「マラソンは他のどの陸上競技よりも過酷だ。」
This machine tool is more versatile than any other machine.「この工作機械は他のどの機械よりも汎用性が高い。」
