ぜひ覚えておきたい比較級を使った慣用表現の二回目です。
形容詞の比較級を使った慣用表現は英文に頻出しますし、試験にもよく出ます。
今回はその中でも必ず覚えておきたい重要表現を選びました。
この機会に確認しておきましょう。
１．no more than 「～しかない＝only」
２．no less than 「～もの＝as many as, as much as」
３．not more than「せいぜい＝at most」
４．not less than「少なくとも＝at least」
５．no better than「～にすぎない、～も同然」
６．no more A than B「Aでないのと同様にBでない」
７．no less A than B「B同様Aだ」
８．not ～ any longer「もはや～ない」
９．know better than to ～「～するほど馬鹿じゃない」
10. much(still) less「～は言うまでもない＝let alone」
※ no や not は負（－）と考え、more は正（＋）、less は負（－）と考えましょう。
no(not) more は（－）×（＋）＝（－）つまり否定的、
no(not) less は（－）×（－）＝（＋）つまり肯定的と考えればわかり易いでしょう。
それでは以下、例文と合わせてご覧下さい。
１．no more than 「～しかない＝only」
Osako had 10,000 men in his division, but now no more than 1,000 remained.
「大迫の率いる師団は一万人の兵力であったが、今や千人しか残っていなかった。」
２．no less than 「～もの＝as many as, as much as」
That the country was said to have no less than 300,000 men was now found to be a fiction.
「その国の兵力は30万人にも及ぶと言われていたのは今や虚構であると分かった。」
３．not more than「せいぜい＝at most」
Since this school used to be a girls’ high school, even if you recruit baseball team members, not more than 10 players would gather.
「この学校は元女子高だったから、野球部員を募集してもせいぜい10人ぐらいしか集まらないだろう。」
４．not less than「少なくとも＝at least」
She is not a member of any faction, but if she were to run for LDP Presidento, she could easily get not less than 30 recommenders.
「彼女はどの派閥にも属していないが、もし彼女が自民党総裁選に出馬するとしたら、少なくとも30人以上の推薦人を簡単に集めることができるだろう。」
５．no better than「～にすぎない、～も同然」
Blaming your team-mate for his error without taking into account the others, You’re no better than a child.
「仲間のことを考慮せず、チームメイトのエラーを責めているお前はほんの子供だ。」
６．no more A than B「Bでないのと同様にAでない」
He is no more good at playing baseball than his father is.
「かれは父親同様、野球が得意ではない。」
７．no less A than B「B同様Aだ」
She is no less wise than her mother is.
「彼女は母親同様に賢い。」
８．not ～ any longer「もはや～ない」
After the Second World War, Britain was not the once British Empire any longer.
「第二次世界大戦後のイギリスは、もはやかつての大英帝国ではなくなっていた。」
９．know better than to ～「～するほど馬鹿じゃない」
He knows better than to talk to the boss about this nonsense.
「あいつはこんなくだらないことを上司に相談するほど馬鹿じゃない。」
10. much(still) less「～は言うまでもない＝let alone」
He was in a car accident and broke his arm, much less coming to work next week.
「彼は交通事故に遭って腕を骨折したんだ。来週出社できないのは言うまでもないことだろう。」
