動名詞 (gerund) を使った慣用表現は大学入試、TOEIC、英検に必出と言っても過言ではありません。
この際、今回提示するものは全部覚えておきましょう。
このような慣用表現はそのまま覚えてしまう方が効率的な学習法です。
さまざまな試験によく出される出題頻度の高いものをピックアップしてみました。
何回かに分けて取り上げていきます。
例文と合わせてご覧下さい。
１．It is no use Ving
※「しても無駄である。仕方がない」
It is no use crying over spilled milk.
「こぼれたミルクのことで泣いてもしょうがない。」
※「些細なことを気にとめるな」の意。
以下の似たような表現もあります。
※There is no use Ving
There is no use trying again. That’s what I tried doing many times yesterday.
「もう一度やってみても無駄だ。それは昨日俺も何度もやってみた。」
※There is no point in Ving
There’s no point in making excuses. We have evidence.
「言い訳しても無駄だ。証拠はあるんだ。」
２．be late Ving
※「～するのが遅い」
You are late judging everything. You need to stay ahead of your opponent to win the match.
「お前は何事につけ判断するのが遅い。相手の機先を制しないと勝負に勝てんぞ。」
３．It goes without saying (that)～
※「～は言うまでもない」
It goes without saying that he no longer objected to the manager’s instructions after that.
「その後彼が、店長の指示に異議を唱えなくなったのは言うまでもない。」
４．on Ving
※「～するやいなや」
On arriving at home, he ran to the bathroom .
「彼は家に着くや否やトイレに駆け込んだ。」
５．in Ving
※「～している時に」
In resting at Okehazama during the thunderstorm, Imagawa’s army was attacked surprisingly by Oda’s army.
「雷雨の中、桶狭間で休息していた今川軍は、織田軍の奇襲を受けた。
６．with a view to Ving
※「～する意図で、～するつもりで」
The operation was carried out with a view to demoralizing the enemy.
「その作戦は敵の戦意を喪失させる意図で実行された。」
同じような表現で以下のようなものもあります。
※with the view of Ving
That business plan was not made with the view of damaging rival companies.
「その事業計画はライバル会社にダメージを与える意図で立てたものではない。」
※for the purpose of Ving
This trip isn’t for fun, it’s for the purpose of studying ethnographic aspects of the area.
「この旅行は遊びではなく、この地域の民族学的な側面を研究するためのものです。」
７．when it comes to Ving
※「～に関して言えば、～するということになると」
When it comes to running long-distance, he is second to none in this high school.
「こと長距離走に関して言えば、この高校で彼の右に出る者はいないよ。」
８．never without Ving
※「～する時はきまって～する、～しないと気がすまない」
I never come to Sendai without eating Ox tongue at Sendai Station.
「仙台に来たときは決まって仙台駅で牛タンを食べます。」
